Guidelines and Terms of Conditions

1. Please provide stories that inspire, give hope, and encourage people to get help.

2. Our real stories section is not a form of therapy and will not be read or responded to immediately. If you need help now, call our helpline directly.

3. We will try to publish all stories submitted however some may be excluded based on inappropriate content or failure to meet these guidelines. We may at times email you and request edits be made to your story. We will always seek your permission to do this and allow you to approve any changes. Please do not be discouraged if we do not use your story, it does not make your experiences any less valid, there may simply be an administrative reason we cannot use your story.

4. Your experience is unique to you. Your story and your journey is a valid and important one but please share your story in a respectful way by:
   • Telling us only what you feel comfortable sharing publicly on Spectra Helpline’s website
   • Being honest – with yourself and others
   • Using your own words – you don’t have to be a literary genius
   • Considering that other people who may be young, vulnerable or have a different view point, could be reading your story
   • Telling us the challenges you faced but also focus on solutions
   • Trying to consider how your story will impact others who are distressed
   • Considering ways that you can use your unique experience to help someone else who might be going through a similar thing you have been through
   • Trying to include a positive conclusion or outcome in your story

5. Please avoid including the following in your story:
   • Providing graphic accounts of suicide or violence including location, method or injuries
   • Using offensive, discriminatory or volatile language, or language meant to provoke someone else
   • Using other people’s names in your story – instead try language such as “Husband”, “Friend” or “Sister”
   • Do not disclose specific locations
   • Focusing only on the negative, instead try to highlight your strengths, achievements and the solutions you have found.

Use of personal stories
To educate donors and the public about the services provided by Spectra Helpline it is necessary to share stories about personal experiences.

By submitting a personal story through Spectra Helpline’s website form, you consent to its publication on the website. Spectra Helpline reserves the right to edit or delete submissions that it, in its sole discretion, are deemed to be abusive, obscene, or are otherwise inappropriate. We reserve the right to modify or edit stories that are too long.

When using a personal story for feature in a fundraising or marketing campaign, Spectra Helpline will only publish your story and/or imagery with your prior written consent.
