Volunteering with Spectra Helpline
Make a Difference
We welcome and value every volunteer, from all walks of life. Whatever your interests, experience or skills, we have a role for you. You can make an amazing difference at Spectra. Annually, approximately 300 volunteers give up a few hours of their time every week, to help support people around the Region of Peel find their way, through whatever is troubling them. Volunteers are the lifeline of Spectra. From inception we have relied heavily on dedicated volunteers willing to provide comfort and support to clients and callers.
As a Helpline volunteer, you will support callers on our 24/7 Helpline, as well as our crisis/suicide and elder abuse lines. We provide extensive training to prepare you for your role at Spectra. You will learn how to give your whole attention to each person you’re supporting, and empathize with their feelings without being overwhelmed yourself. You’ll be surrounded by people with the same motivation as you.
As a student at Spectra Helpline, you will have the opportunity to work directly with our callers and clients through phone or chat/text support, using client-centered and strength-based approaches. You will be able to practice and develop your supportive communication skills and improve your understanding of your own strengths and skills, while thriving in your academic learning.
